You know when you say to yourself "I'm hungry” or "I'm full" who you think is saying that? What do you think is making you say that?
…How do you actually know you’re hungry? How do you know you’re full?
…Do you think it's your stomach or your brain telling you that?
What is actually going on in your body when you get the message "I'm hungry" or "I'm full?"
There are all kinds of signals and messages being transported from organ to organ in your body ultimately communicating with your brain. You could be eating yourself into a total body shock that forcing your hormones on a high speed chase colliding right into what I call a "HORMONAL COMA!" Your hormones are just BURNT OUT, not functioning properly and pretty much in a comatose.

Let's get more in depth of a particular hormone I spoke on in the last blog post I left off with Are you Eating A Hormonal Breakfast? I spoke on the hormone known as LEPTIN.
What is Leptin?...And How does it work?
Leptin is that hormone that waves the white flag and tells your body "I’m full!" It plays a major role in your hunger and weight management. See your body is a walking talking breathing survival defense machine on auto-pilot, but only if you fuel it properly. It puts the brakes on hunger by sending a signal to your brain when your body's is satiated and uses the necessary energy to feed off of for long periods of time. Well until your next meal that is!
Now sometimes many of us go against those signals and keep eating, eat multiple times between meals and snacking when we are not even hungry which is HIJACKING your own body, blocking off those signals and now everything is out of whack not working properly. Your body signals are just acting wild like a bunch of wild teenagers whose parents went on vacation. There's NO rules, NO structure, NO signals to keep in order telling them what to do. They just do what they wanna do, they can signal when they want to OR NOT!
THAT’S YOUR BODY WHEN IT’S LEPTIN RESISTANT!
Your "leptin parents" are on vacation, only thing they're not coming back unless the house is clean (meaning your body) and you're ready to listen to them! When you overeat pass the necessary energy expenditure threshold that’s a one way express ticket to killing your body's ability to figure out if your fat levels are too high or not, basically halting the leptin receptors in their tracks. The more this happens the more the body accumulates fat and could leads down a dark dangerous path of OBESITY.
A properly functioning leptin system encourages better metabolic functioning, your metabolism is performing properly, better brain function, memory, mental sharpness, improves emotions and mood. But when it's been hijacked it can cause many dysfunctions such as weight gain, brain fogs, depression just to name a few.
Leptin resistance evil twin little sister is insulin resistance. Leptin can predict insulin sensitivity and its known that insulin sensitivity can lead to Type 2 Diabetes and obesity.
So let's get more in the production of leptin which is made from fat cells. In a nutshell the more fat you have, the more it makes leptin. Eating high amounts of sugar, excessive stress and exposure to toxins can lead to the effects of Leptin Resistance.
So how could one reverse Leptin sensitivity and jump start their weight loss?
AH HA! Glad you ask! Here are 3 ways that you could get your “ducks” in a row or shall I say “leptin in a row,” but first before I share I just want you to think of one specific thing.
HORMONES!
That’s right leptin is a hormone and in order to get them to functioning properly you must first consider to REBALANCE YOUR HORMONE LEVELS. In order to do so you must:
1. EAT 3 BALANCE MEALS: consisting of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most people do not eat breakfast or even skip meals and are lucky if they get 2 meals in every day let alone 3. Make sure to make healthier choice of meals and ditch the coffee and the bagel. This is the #1 LEPTIN KILLER, is NOT a proper meal and has no nutritional value. It is very important to properly feed your body the nourishment it needs and NEVER SKIP a meal. Skipping meals will later cause you to binge eat and crave all the wrong foods, which goes into my next point.
2. QUIT THE CONSISTENT SNACKING! Now we all know that Doritos, Debbie Cakes, Snickers and Cinnabons etc are all a complete NO NO and not apart of a proper diet plan. However, there’s been many strong debates that even “healthy” snacking can stir you off course. When you’re eating consistently between meals this confuses your body and throws a big glitch in the system throwing your body signals off. Snacking too often, especially unhealthy fatty foods can disrupt leptin signaling. Sure!...Many can argue that you should have snacks between meals. Even trainers, coaches and nutritionist would provide sample meal plans that would advise to have multiple snacks throughout the day between meals even justifying it by stating it ‘speeds up the metabolism.” Don’t feel bad I was personally one of those trainers that would advise my clients to snack often to avoid feeling hungry and even personally had a similar meal plan for myself. Unless you are an elite athlete, body builder or extremely active and start your day super early then you may require a snack or two between meals. However, for the ‘average Joe’ you want to taper the snacking down to the bare minimum. Now there are some new clients with a fairly new regimen that I may work in a snack here and there in their program until they get acquainted and find foods that keeps them satiated between meals. Which most snacks are of course healthy choices a fruit or vegetable and preferably in the early part of the day or before workouts. You want to avoid the late night, which is a beast within itself! (Will elaborate more in future post.) Water is best between meals to help avoid the snacking and keep you feeling fuller longer.
3. BREAK UP WITH SUGAR: Yup time to kick your “SUGAR Daddy” to the curb. (Only in this case, in real life keep him!) High amounts of refined and process sugars doesn’t properly break down, it is stored as fat instead of being used as energy and runs havoc on your hormone levels. Totally limit your sugar intake and opt for more of raw organic sugar, cane sugar, coconut sugar, agave, raw honey or actual fruit instead. Take a look at your nutrition labels and just observe how much sugar is in EVERYTHING, even condiments such as ketchup and salad dressings. Be sure to read the labels and see how much grams of sugar are in each serving. Keep to a minimum as much as possible. It’s always better to buy organic as much as possible and AVOID AT ALL COST anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup, which should be labeled Devil Syrup! Fructose and sucralose are artificial sugar, stay away from it as much as possible and even check and notice how they are putting these ingredients in so called health foods, drinks, bars etc.
There are other foods as well as particular lifestyles just as high stress that can drive hormones haywire causing leptin receptors to just not communicate. If you start with incorporating these 3 tools I can assure you, you will find great benefits as I have found so myself. Please let me remind you that this is a lifestyle and takes trips and falls long the way. While all this may seem challenging and for some just down right blasphemy, but with patience and a little dedication to keep on track your hormones will start to rebalance and communicate properly sending the right leptin signals to your body eventually losing that unwanted body fat you been struggling to lose.
